Portland, Maine is home to some great eateries. It is known as a food haven with many farm-to-table restaurants. Below are a few of our favorites that we thought worthy of pointing out:

Twelve $$$$

If Michelin awarded stars in Maine, this restaurant would be in the conversation. Elegant, thoughtful, and very European in style and pacing. It is perfect for a special night out albeit pricey. Reservations are highly recommended as this place fills up.

Scales $$$

Beautiful waterfront setting and some of the best seafood in town. The menu also includes excellent options for those who prefer meat, making it an easy crowd-pleaser. Reservations highly recommended

Fore Street Restaurant $$$

One of the city’s classics, celebrated for rustic, local cooking done beautifully. The check-in can be a little serious, the meal and service rarely disappoint. Reservations a must

Evo Kitchen $$ -$$$

A fun mediterranean spot with lots of small plates coming from a wood-fired oven. Great energy, bold flavors and perfect for sharing with a table. Reservations are a must

Via Veccia $$ -$$$

A chic Italian spot with a beautiful room, strong cocktails, and a menu of pastas and favorites. When everything clicks it is terrific.

Isa Bistro $$ -$$$

A small, thoughtful restaurant with a frequently changing menu and serious attention to ingredients. It is a bit removed from the Old Port and in a rougher area, but if you are up for an adventure it is very rewarding. A hidden gem with very nice owners.

Flatbread Company $$

Terrific wood-fired pizza in a relaxed, slightly hippie, family friendly setting. Easy, fun and ideal when you want something casual.

East Ender $$

A relaxed local favorite with creative appetizers, excellent sandwiches, and a welcoming bar. Perfect when you want something satisfying without the formality of a big dinner out. Great lunch option

Island Lobster $$

A perfect lunch spot once you are on Peaks Island. Fresh lobster rolls, good chicken sandwiches, and plenty of outdoor seating with classic views of the Casco Bay and the city in the background. Don’t forget to add a Whoopie Pie.

The Cockeyed Gull $$

Right at the ferry landing with great views of the Casco Bay, this is a relaxed spot for drinks or a meal on the island. Along with seafood favorites they serve a surprisingly good Korean Bulgogi. Eating on the deck in the evening gives you the opportunity to watch the sunset, but bring sunglasses.
